Why do people constantly ask about Solar Power, but just ask?
This baffles me. I see so many questions about what is solar power, over and over. This has to be one of the most basic of green conversations. It can be found all over the Internet.
I suppose what really baffles me is that they talk, but hardly anyone ever goes in their backyard to really build a system. Do you really know anyone who has actually put up a PV array? Perhaps built a thermal heater? A water heater?
It always seems to be the most ideal discussion, but no one really ever tries it. No one can really afford PV, but they talk like it’s the perfect silver bullet. Just tack them up, and start enjoying the renewables, minus the hook up and installation that a professional almost has to complete.
I think the questions should be, I want to build a system, what’s the quickest, simplest way, and not be told to go to Mother Earth News right away. That is a great site, but no practical knowledge is ever really shed right here.

Today, with increasing cost of other forms of power, solar power is required to be tapped. For this purpose, many Governments have subsidized Solar power materials so that many can resort to generate this type of power. In Israel, every household converts Solar power for their daily use. In India, of late, many households are using Solar power for heating purposes. There are many commercial ventures who supply solar panels at affordable rates. The cost is likely to come down in future and everyone will be forced to use solar power. You can visit
well some people just like to talk about it. Some just don’t want to go through the hassle of setting their energy needs to solar.
I am glad more Americans are showing interest in solar power. It will take time to catch on. Sometimes things have to get really bad before it can get better if you know what I mean. Where I live, we have solar homes as the norm and wind turbines atop areas of the mountain ranges. Most people here are not DIYers when it comes to these large panels although I see some rig up a small variety in their garden and I do not know why. They do hire professionals ( yes, they went to college or school for this) for installation of the large solar panels .
Because they look into it and then see how expensive it is, easily $10,000-$50,000. I don’t know who has that kinda money laying around during times like these. I dont have 10 years for the solar panel to start paying me back. Who knows what crisis next week will bring, you can have your “green” energy and I`ll have money in my bank. I mean when the state of California is handing out IOU`s as tax rebates because they cant pay their citizens the money they owe them for their taxes thats pretty bad. Being environmentally green isn’t really a priority right now.
Plus this is Yahoo Answers, not Yahoo Build or Yahoo Construction, thats what ppl do here they ask questions.
Between direct and indirect solar energy there are a lot of options out there but for now, harnessing that energy is not obtainable for the average family… good luck solving that one…
It looks good but as U study it U find that it is far too expensive. If U build one large enough to be effective the pay out will be 30 years.
I am a conservative Republican. Yes I did build a solar heater for the summer months. It cost me about $500 bucks to do it and has almost paid for itself in one year.
I got three old water tanks put them in a housing under Plexiglas and ran the water to it before it goes to the hot water heater. The tanks are connected in series hence the water in each tank is warmer than the one previous. I believe if you google batch solar heater you will get some ideas.
I know a couple people with PV. One guy (a doctor) took the panels off his house and took them with him when he moved.
I can’t afford them, so have a black barrel full of water in the sun that heats my water during the summer. No real pressure to it, but it cost only a few dollars to make. Even better are the double paned windows that keep out the heat in the summer and keep it in in the winter.
Because nobody really cares about going green. They know that the term going green is just PC corporate money making words.
Alternate renewable energy is a good idea, but expensive to start. And you save little once going, due to someone will capitalize on it.
Anyone sincerely seeking knowledge is welcome here, as far as I’m concerned. I’m not bothered if the same question is asked over and over again. Everyone must start somewhere, and some don’t know to search previous answers.
I see that a few of the answerers here have actually built something. And I put solar electric on our house. It was not cheap, and is not a moneymaker. But neither is it a big money-loser, either. The folks posting glowing reports of PV solar cost/performance are often scammers trying to sell e-Books or something similar.
Although our system is about break-even over time, costs of panels are dropping, so this solution will definitely start to make sense for an increasing number of people.
If you think Tebow is gay then you are jealous of his success. Leave it alone and move on. You lost to the nations greatest QB EVER. Is it a sin for someone to become a great leader to women as well as men. I defend him although he probably could care less of all the gossip and rumors, he answers to God not a human fool.
